According to the US Census Bureau, an household with more that one individual (say two for the heck of it), and if one of them were earnings minimum wage and supporting the other, they are below poverty right away. How good is minimum wage if in spite of working hard for 40 hours per week every week of the year and still are not able to sustain?
Proponents of wage increase (read democrats) believe that raising the minimum wage would help the poor, while detractors (read republicans) of this legislation believe that raising the wage would in fact result in many being laid-off, making it worse for the poor. If both parties are (partly) correct with respect to their assessments, Americas poor stands to suffer the unintentional consequence of capitalism, while some benefit, others lose.

From NPR News: Republicans Turn Attention to Abolishing Estate Tax
President Bush this week is expected to sign a $70 billion tax-cut package into law. It will lower rates for investors and save billions of dollars for families with above-average incomes. Now Republicans in Congress are turning their attention toward the estate tax. They want it repealed permanently.
The estate tax is imposed on only 0.5 percent of Americans, who own estates worth over $2,000,000. Repealing it would mean the rich would get richer, amending the legislation to accommodate the rich is the Republican way to appease the upper echelon of the conservative right. It won’t be worthwhile if Republicans fair poorly in the November senate and possibly the 2008 Presidential elections.

According to a recent report, the Virginia DMV issued one in five drivers a customized plate. With over 1.5 million plates, Virginia is leading the nation for vanity plates. What does it mean to the DMV, only about $9,100,000/year.
