The June 4th floods have raged for over 2 weeks now, and Bush finally made time to get there. In the mean time, Red Cross Midwest has set up a site on WordPress.com to provide updates, at some 240 posts over 10 days, this site provides updates that are brief and some very detailed instructions to those in the affected region.

Katrina: A Year Later

NO

Marcellus Andrews commenting on New Orleans, a comment worth many blog posts!
Katrina’s destruction of New Orleans is a symbol of our greatest collective sin. Our society ties the right to survival, even down to surviving a natural disaster, to the size of one’s wallet. In the old New Orleans, people with money lived on high ground, while poor people lived way below sea-level.

When the flood waters came, poor people drowned. They didn’t have enough money to leave town.

Katrina claimed so many because the people of Louisiana and the good ole US of A pretended that safety is a private good instead of a public good.

In this country, safety is just one more thing for sale …

Downtown Richmond Tech Park Evacuated

fire

The construction crew at the new Phillip Morris biotech building accidentally caused a gas leak which resulted in evacuation of over 400 people, including me. The guys in-charge of the evacuation can all pat each others back, because as most of us walked in the direction specified, we realized we were walking downstream/downwind of the gas leak and could smell the gas for the next 15 minutes. Brilliant! Maybe FEMA trained them, or maybe they were FEMA. And thanks to Phillip Morris for the 10 AM break.

FEMA gone wild

femaA new investigation reveled that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) spent 16 percent of federal aid to hurricane Katrina victims for items like- sex change, vacation, seasons ticket for the New Orleans Saints, Champagne, and Girls Gone Wild videos!!! Government Accountability Office believes that the fraudulent payments were in the range of $600 million to $1.4 billons.

First they screw up, then they steal from the aid, how considerate.
