Google SERP Changes in August 2008 Rock the Boat

Have you noticed lately that certain keywords you traditionally scored high in Google are no longer driving traffic your way? Chances are that you lost the spot on Google SERP. Since the changes that started late July and continued into early August, most all web sites that relied on Google SERP have in one way or the other been affected. Case in point, we are no longer ranked for the keyword “Web Design”, it has been replaced by sites like About.com, WikiPedia.org, forums and directories, all of who basically provide no web design service, instead merely provide the definition of the same. Less than half the SE results are for actual providers of web design services, which means, according to Google’s algorithm, only half the folks are actually looking for web design services, the rest are simply looking for information about web design(ing). Oh well.

So this explains my drop in search traffic. How often throughout a year does something like this occur? Does it usually correct itself?

    @ Foodguy

There is no way to tell if it will correct itself, since it is not an error, it’s just the way Google wants the SERP to be. One theory is that Google is favoring sites that use their “checkout” services, but I do not believe it is the case. We just need to wait and watch, the changes happen once every 3-4 months.
