Search Engine Optimization for Images

While I did a search in Google.nl for zoekmachine optimalisatie I found many SEO companies that include image optimization in their marketing packages. There are many different reasons why Webmasters and SEO firms start to optimize their images to be better listed by search engines. One of them is to improve ranking of your internal pages of the web site, for example if your web site is about branding you rather give file names to your images like internet-branding.jpg or brand-strategy.gif and do not use 76372NA.gif or SCR-70-1.jpg as this will not improve your position in search engine listings because it is totally unrelated to your content. Tell search engines what your images are about by creating correct file names matching the content on your page. Additionally you can add relevant alt tags to every image on your site to tell Google what this image is about. This will help to give your images better positions in Google image search, it also can influence the ranking of your pages in general conducted searches.

Most people on the Internet misunderstand the concept of SEO as they want to see quick results. Professional companies have a price tag for the quality work and excellent results they deliver. Targeted keywords are often a part of a search engine marketing package that can be purchased. Normally optimization for web sites can take up to one year or longer. It depends on the keywords you have chosen, age of a web site, the file structure and the server and system used to manage and update your web site. As not all systems or content managers are seo compatible. I hope this post has helped you strategize your images naming to increase the ranking of your web site.

When I take over a site for a client it is quite normal to see images named as 1234.jpg. Why some companies use file naming and image naming like this is quite amazing really. But in general, when I talk to some clients, they don’t really think about inside page optimization, they just want to stuff the home page with keywords that have nothing whatsoever to do with the content. The same goes for images.

Good article and a good way of remembering an image if it’s to be modified.
