I believe that a company should have some sort of excitement about their website. It is a reflection of who they are and what they represent. At the basic level, if a potential client notices that this site looks very similar to ABC company's website then a red flag will pop up. If this company is cutting corners on their own website, what corners are they cutting for services that they give to me. I don't want to sound nasty by saying"cutting corners" If a template is all you can afford then go get one. Just remember that this is your business we are talking about.
