Boom : North Korea Goes Nuclear
Pyongyang tests a nuke, so what is the big deal? If you look at the legalities of their action, North Koreans are neither bound by any International treaties nor did they try to hide the fact about the testing unlike India and Pakistan in 1998. North Korea pulled out of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2003; they openly worked towards making a nuclear arsenal and tested in conditions that were not detrimental to anyone.
So why the fuss? Politics as usual. The mid-term elections are less than a month away. The Republicans are smeared with embarrassing controversies like the Mark Foley scandal and are facing tough challenge from the Democrats who are favored for opposing the failing war in Iraq. From past elections, the Republican stronghold has always been the “War in Terror and “Homeland Security and that is exactly what the North Koreans have given President Bush, a propaganda arsenal to wipe off the Democrats.
If this attention diverging tactics works, the next four weeks will be all about North Korean nuclear missile test and how it threatens American homeland. Let’s face it; Pyongyang couldn’t get a paper kit into flight leave alone a missile. Their previous surface-to-surface missile test was a joke, not one of the nine missiles reached even half the intended range.

But you are not suggesting that the Koreans timed it for the benefit of the Republicans?
I agree, I’m not too concerned about NK at the moment, but it will be interesting to see what SK, Japan, and the U.S. do as well as the interference from hand-sitters China and Russia.
