How I lost and found my blog: troubleshooting WordPress database

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

wordpressIn trying to consolidate my site to include my ported theme designs and blog, I changed a setting on the WordPress Options (WordPress address (URI): & Blog address (URI):) from my sub-domain address (hso…) to my main domain (headsetoptions.org). That was it, my blog was gone! No way to access it and no way to restore. My foolish confidence (which is how I modify themes) had screwed me up, two years of my wasted time…wasted. Of course, internet is a wonderful thing when you are a dumb ass, for example, I figured ways to troubleshoot my home AC, lawn mover, Saab, wife’s laptop, … using the internet, so why not WordPress. Well as I had guessed, skill is not what I lacked, it was information, there is a way out, here is how.

(Backup and Restoring)

First you need to access your phpadmin page, if you do not know how, contact your blog host. Then you need to log in and identify your database name. Then (backup) download the wp_ files as instructed here. Once downloaded, if you screw up your WordPress settings (as I did), it is best to delete both your WP install and your database and recreate them. REMEMBER, do it only if you are sure you have the back up downloaded first! Then restore the files into a new (domain in my case) database or the existing database (if restoring) as instructed here. Now my blog is back, but on the main domain (http://www.headsetoptions.org for those who care). Please visit and bookmark my site.

I went back and recreated the sub domains, that way my links are intact (or at least no leading to a 404 page), the little bit of HTML or JavaScript knowledge helped (if you are not the do it yourself type, just search for redirect JavaScript on the web and you should get plenty). I installed a redirect index page on the root of the sub domain. Done. It’s a little annoyance, but that was the best way out.
