From NPR News: Republicans Turn Attention to Abolishing Estate Tax

President Bush this week is expected to sign a $70 billion tax-cut package into law. It will lower rates for investors and save billions of dollars for families with above-average incomes. Now Republicans in Congress are turning their attention toward the estate tax. They want it repealed permanently.

The estate tax is imposed on only 0.5 percent of Americans, who own estates worth over $2,000,000. Repealing it would mean the rich would get richer, amending the legislation to accommodate the rich is the Republican way to appease the upper echelon of the conservative right. It won’t be worthwhile if Republicans fair poorly in the November senate and possibly the 2008 Presidential elections.
