It is common knowledge that Catholics make up over a quarter of eligible voters in America, and have determined the fates of all Presidential elections in the past 29 years, no wonder anyone and everyone in Washington are out to appease them. This shift in dominance of Catholics in a predominately Protestant country is no surprise with the overwhelming Latino influx, changing the demographics unlike anything in the past 100 years.
Take for instance the 2004 election, more Catholics voted for President Bush than in the 2000 elections, a good 5 percent increase, interesting the Latinos votes for President Bush in the 2004 election was up by 9 percent from the earlier election. What does it really mean for America? For one, increased political favoritism to appeal to the emerging demographics- to list a few:
- Alberto Gonzales appointed as the U.S. Attorney General
- Judge John Roberts appointed as the seventeenth Chief Justice of the United States
- Judge Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr. appointed as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States
- The recent Immigration reform proposals before Congress that has sparked a nationwide political debate.
If that was not enough, the Church has started meddling with State affairs; In California, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles has sparked a controversial campaign pushing to change the criminal statutes of illegal immigration into a lesser charge, like a minor offence. During a service recently, Mahony quoted “our golden rule has always been to serve people in need - to not to verify beforehand their immigration status. But the bill imposes incredible penalties upon any person assisting others through a church or social service organization.” Does that mean that a Church or other religious institution provide shelter to criminals or worse terrorists and should not be held liable?
Those who undermine this issue by stating that “America was founded by immigrants should not forgot that there are legal channels to immigrate to America and this option is still open for all. With that said, it is imperative to highlight the doctrine that separates the affairs of church and state. It was established at the time of American independence that “the institutions of the state or national government should be kept separate from those of religious institutions, this rule applies conversely to the church too. In strict observance of this doctrine, the Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, in this case the Catholic Church. Will the 18th century Jeffersonian ideology apply in this instance? Only time can tell.
